Garnets catch Foxes - win 5-1

Posted Friday, February 26, 2010 by Jim Powers

Fox Lane fans thought for a moment that they might have an underdog victory when the Foxes scored first in Wednesday’s game against the Garnets at Playland.  Although the Garnets were dominating Fox Lane, the Garnets had been unable to score.  Rye finally broke through and evened the score just before the first period ended on their way to a 5-1 victory.  The Garnets came back in the second and third period, skating away with a four-point win over the Foxes while advancing to the semi-finals this Saturday.

With Rye’s 5-1 defeat of Fox Lane, the Garnets advanced to the Division II Section Semifinals. The game was originally scheduled for tonight, but due to the inclement weather it has been shifted to tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. Rye will battle Sleepy Hollow, who bested Garnet nemesis Pelham 2-0 on Wednesday in the quarterfinals.

Scoring for the Garnets were captains Taka Katsuta and Paul Mundinger.  Also scoring for the Garnets were Alfredo Holguin, who scored his first goal of the season and Brian Powers, who scored a thrilling third Rye goal which spelled the end of the Foxes.  Among the cheering Rye fans was Taka Katsuta’s grandfather, who made a special trip from Japan to see his grandson play, and was rewarding with two goals from Taka.
