Garnets TIE Ice Cats 4-4 (adds Coach quote)

The Saturday night showdown between the Rye Garnets and the Mt. Pleasant Ice Cats at the Mount Vernon Ice Hutch ended in a 4-4 tie. Forty five minutes of regulation time and 5 minutes of sudden death OT did not produce a victor, but it was very exciting.

Despite Cal Hynson’s goal 24 seconds into the game (!) the Garnets trailed 2-1 at the end of the first period.  The second period ended with the teams deadlocked 2-2. Both teams at times looked lackluster, having trouble mounting a consistent offense. In the third period the Ice Cats scored a power play goal early to take the lead and despite two power plays in the middle of the 3rd period it was looking bleak for Rye until Connor McGovern split the defense and scored with 1:18 left in the game; tying the game, lifting the Garnets spirits, and forcing OT.

Overtime was a completely different story, the Garnet’s came alive and played with intensity and focus. Suddenly, the Garnet’s were skating fast, stringing passes together and forcing the play. The Ice Cats responded, but Rye’s hustle was rewarded with a power play. The end to end, back and forth play with very good scoring opportunities for both teams ended with Rye outshooting Mt. Pleasant 4-2 in the OT period. Let’s hope the Garnets carry that level of play into their next challenge on Tuesday night versus rival Mamaroneck!

“If we had played in regulation the way we did during the overtime period I think the outcome would have been different” said Coach Jason Friesen, “one of the goals for this season is to play well, with more consistency from period to period and game to game”.

Scoring a goal each for Rye (in order) was Captain Cal Hynson, sophomore Theo Bresolin, freshman Matthew Holmes, and senior Connor McGovern. Assisting on the goals were Theo Bresolin, senior Garret DiEdwards, and senior Connor Hatch. The Garnets outshot the Ice Cats 22-20, and went 0-4 on the power play and 1-2 on the penalty kill. There was another good turnout at 6.30pm on a Saturday by the Garnets fan base!

The Garnet’s next game is tomorrow night, Tuesday December 10 at 8.20pm at the Hommocks Rink versus the rival Mamaroneck Tigers. A Fan Bus will depart Rye High School at 7.15pm, $5 will be collected on the bus (includes admission to the game). If this game is anything like last year’s 4-2 win over the Tigers you won’t want to miss it – come out support your hockey Garnets!
