Looking Ahead: Big 2 Game Weekend for the Garnets!

Posted Wednesday, December 11, 2013 by Paul Deen

Coming off a decisive win against ETB and a tie versus Mt. Pleasant, the Garnets have their work cut out for them this weekend. On Saturday at 2:45pm at the Ice Hutch they face off against the 2-1 Shenendehowa Plainsmen.  On Sunday at 12:30pm also at the 1997 founded Ice Hutch the Liverpool Warriors (2-1) square off against the Garnets. Rye is the home team for both games (best  opening ceremonies in Section 1?).

Shenendehowa (Section II,  D1), coming off their 5-0 blowout of Mamaroneck last Saturday, takes on the Pelham Pelicans on Friday night and Rye on Saturday afternoon both at the Ice Hutch.  Eyes will be on the their two leading scorers; Peter Russo (Jr. F) and Peter Sacks (Sr. D) each with 4 goals in 3 games. Goaltender Ben Farstad enters the Ice Hutch with a 1.71 Goals Against Average and 87.5% Save Percentage. It will be interesting to see if they can stay out of the penalty box: they have amassed 29.5 penalty minutes over 3 games (one player has 10!). They were mired with penalties when they lost to St. Joe’s, but stayed out of the sin bin against  Mamaroneck and won. In the first 3 games this season they have outscored opponents 21-4, scored 2 power play goals, and one shorthanded goal.

On Sunday, the Liverpool Warriors (Section III, D1), who won the Ontario Bay Tournament last Saturday with a 3-2 OT win over Watertown, come to the Ice Hutch.  Prior to playing the Garnets, the Warriors play the Scarsdale Raiders  on Saturday.  Leading the offense for the Warriors is Dalton Horton with 4 goals and 6 points and Kody Gaulke with 4 assists and 6 points.  Goalie Steven Kozikoski  has a 1.94  GAA and a 91.4% SPct. Over their first 3 games they have outscored their opponents 9-6, and interestingly have had strong 1st periods outscoring opponents 7-0.

The 2013/14 Garnets need your support! With over half (56%) of the players new to the team this year, these early season games are key to getting the team to gel, getting into a rhythm, and boosting confidence.  Supportive fans can help this cause!  These should be two exciting games this weekend - come out and cheer your Garnets on!
