Garnets Lose to Liverpool 5-3: A Tale of 3 Periods (adds Coach's Quote)

Posted Wednesday, December 18, 2013 by Paul Deen

It was a tale of 3 periods this past Sunday, as the Rye Garnets lost to the Liverpool Warriors 5-3 at the Ice Hutch in front of a sparse noon-time crowd.

The 1st Period was all about penalties, 5 for Rye and 1 for Liverpool. All five goals scored in the period were during penalties: the Garnets opened the scoring on a beautiful shorthanded goal by Cal Hynson, Liverpool then returned the favor during the same power play. With the score tied 2-2 , the Garnets got into penalty trouble with 2:35 left in the first frame and  the resulting 5 on 3 power play gave the Warriors a 3-2 lead to end the period.

After giving up two quick goals at the beginning of the 2nd Period, the Garnets settled down and a back and forth track meet began. Exciting end to end hockey with great opportunities for both teams ensued. Even though Rye was outshot 7 to 13, after the initial lapse, the period produced no more goals. Rye had turned up the intensity level.

In the 3rd Period the Garnets really came on, winning face offs, generating 2 power plays, scoring a goal , and most importantly holding the Warriors off the score board. Rye out played their opposition, and was handed a great opportunity to close the gap with a power play with 3 minutes left in the game but they could just not find the back of the net.

Coach Friesen summed it up, “a lack of focus and discipline led to five goals in the first 17 minutes of the game. Unfortunately, that was a hole we couldn't dig out of despite playing much better over the final 28 minutes of regulation”.

Getting in the points column on Sunday were: Cal Hynson with a goal and an assist; the “two Connor’s”, Connor McGovern and Connor Hatch each with one goal; Theo Bresolin with two assists; and, Derek Mullane with an assist. Statistically, Rye was outshot 21-29 by the Warriors, and went 1/3 on the power play versus 3/5 by Liverpool.

Sadly, the Garnets had two games cancelled last week due to the weather. Tuesday’s game against the Mamaroneck Tigers has been rescheduled to February 4th, 2014 at 8:20pm at Hommocks, and Saturday’s game again visiting Shenendehowa was cancelled.

The Garnet’s next game is this Saturday night December 22 at 6:30pm versus North Rockland at the Sport-O-Rama rink at 20 College Rd, Monsey, NY. There is nothing like Saturday night High School hockey! This is the Garnets last game in the area until 2014. Come out and support your Rye Garnets!
