Rye Garnets Win BOTH Games in a Weekend of FIRSTS!

Posted Monday, January 13, 2014 by Paul Deen

The Rye Garnets defeated both the Fox Lane Foxes and the Ossining Pride this past weekend, in a weekend of “firsts”: the Garnets are over .500 for the first time this season, extending their record to 4-3-1; many players scored their first varsity goals; and, it was the first time in over a  year that the team scored ten or more goals in a game, yet alone 27 goals in two consecutive games!

Needless to say Coach Friesen was happy with the team’s effort, “[It was] very pleasing to see two tremendous offensive performances. It was also great to get some players much deserved ice time.”

Getting their FIRST VARSITY GOALS this past weekend were: Theo Berner; Michael Kamer with a goal, an assist and a plus 10 rating; and, Billy Haynes with two goals on Saturday which helped him earn Player of Week #5 honors (in addition to 2 assists and a plus 6 rating).

On Saturday January 11th  at the Mount Vernon Ice Hutch the Garnets took on  the Fox Lane Foxes, it was a lopsided affair, Rye won 15-1. Each of the following players scored two goals: Connor McGovern (5 points), Cal Hynson (4 points), Theo Bresolin (4 points), and Billy Haynes (3 points).  Each of the following  players scored one goal: Andrew Urbanczyk (3 points), Tommy O’Brien (3 points), Matthew Holmes (3 points), Connor Hatch (2 points), Pat Curran (2 points), Michael Kamer, and Theo Berner. Leading the assist category were: Jack O’Brien (2 points), Griffin Tutun, Will Tutun, and Garret DiEdwards.  Goalie Nat Deen held the Foxes scoreless for the first two periods, facing only four shots, and turned away the Foxes’ only real scoring chance on a breakaway with a glove save. Andrew Lipari played the third period for the Garnets. Thank you to all the fans who came out to support the team, the fan bus was full of energy on the way back to RHS!

The following evening at the Brewster Ice Arena, the Garnets faced off against the Ossining Pride, the outcome was virtually the same, Rye won 12-1. Each of the following players scored two goals: Cal Hynson (4 points), Connor McGovern (3 points), Andrew Urbanczyk (3 points), and Pat Curran (3 points). Each of the following  players scored one goal:  Jack O’Brien (3 points),  Connor Hatch (2 points), Theo Bresolin (2 points), and Nick Berger. Leading the assist category were: Billy Haynes, Michael Kamer, Derek Mullane, and Matthew Holmes. Goalie Nat Deen faced twelve shots over the first two periods, and was beaten only once by the Pride’s top goal scorer James Brosnan. Nick Gordon played the third period and faced only three shots but one of which was a penalty shot (!) which he stopped, much to the “suicide” relief of the rest of the team!

The Garnets have two games this coming weekend – come out and support your team!

THURSDAY January 16th at 9:00pm at the Ebersol Rink versus Rye Town Harrison and

SATURDAY January 18th at 6:45pm the Ice Hutch versus Fordham.
