 Garnets Defeat Rival Mamaroneck 3-1!

Last night at the Hommocks Rink in Larchmont (another “home-away-from-home” for these still (!) hockey nomads) the Rye Garnets (8-8-1) defeated another of their rivals, the Mamaroneck Tigers (8-11-0)  3-1 in a come from behind win.

The Tigers established their hard hitting fore-check style from the opening puck drop and the Garnets had to weather the up tempo storm, despite turning the puck over too frequently in the first period. The first period ended 0-0 with the Garnets outshooting the Tigers 7-6.

Mamaroneck scored 30 seconds into the second period, when Rye failed to clear the puck, and a right side point slap shot was nicely deflected  into the left side of the net. Fortunately, the Garnets don’t get dejected when they give up the first goal, in fact they Garnets dominated the rest of the second frame. They lead in every statistic except the most important one; neither team scored in the second but Rye had outshot Mamaroneck 19-13  by the end of period.

The third period was a different story, adjusting their own fore-check between the second and third period, the Garnets were able to keep the play mostly in the Mamaroneck end. After some key saves by the Garnet goalie, Rye finally scored their first goal with just 3:00 minutes remaining in regulation. Then just 18 seconds later, Nat Deen made an acrobatic leg save against the Tigers and the Garnets took the rebound up the ice and scored on the very same play (a potential 2 goal swing in one play). The Garnets sealed the victory with another goal a minute and a half later to make it 3-1. The Garnets had exploded for 3 goals in less than two minutes to crush their opposition!

Scoring for Rye (in order) was Connor Hatch from Theo Bresolin and Will Hynson; Connor McGovern from Theo Bresolin; and, Joseph Watanabe-Gastel from Connor McGovern and Jack O’Brien. Goalie Nat Deen  allowed only one goal on 20 shots.

Coming after a snow day and with no fan bus there still was as strong turnout by the Rye Fan Faithful who were loud and supportive as usual – and they were treated to a big win!

There are THREE regular season games left, come out and cheer your Garnets on!
